Understanding our identity in Christ is unquestionably crucial to our success in living the Christian life. Next to a knowledge of God, a knowledge of who we are is by far the most important truth we can possess.
As a Christian your identity changed when you turned to Christ in repentance and put your faith in him. God didn’t change you when you were saved – He created a BRAND-NEW PERSON.
Paul the Apostle write, in 2 Corinthians 5:17-18 (NIV)
“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here! All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation:”
Paul underscores that, to be in Christ is to be a new creation. This new creation is facilitated by the Holy Spirit, the Agent of regeneration (Titus 3:5) and the Giver of divine birth (John 3:3, 6–8). As a matter of fact, before you trusted Christ as Saviour and Lord, you had no spiritual identity.
Ephesians 2:1-5 NIV
“As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins, in which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world…………..But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions—it is by grace you have been saved.” (emphasis added).
Your spirit was dead when you were born into this world and remained that way until the Holy Spirit gave it life through the new birth experience.
If we are to live victorious lives in this world, it is essential that we renew our minds to the truth that the identity of a Christian stem from his connection or relationship with Jesus Christ. You are God’s Child and his own’s handiwork created in Christ Jesus to do good works. Grace be multiplied to you.
